The prolific 18th century writer Daniel Defoe, of Robinson Crusoe fame, wrote poetically of the River Waveney which forms the 50-mile boundary of the Waveney Valley between Norfolk and Suffolk.
“It is a considerable river and of a deep and full channel, navigable for large barges as high as Beccles… turning north, thro’ another long course of meadows it seeks out the River Yare, that it may join its water with hers, and find their way to the sea together.”
