A fine and rare William and Mary double-horizontal bronze sundial by Henry Wynne – £22,000 at Summers Place Auctions.
Henry Wynne (fl.1654-1709), master of the Clockmaker’s Company, produced the finest and largest double-horizontal sundials of the Restoration period.
The instrument, invented earlier in the century by the mathematician and clergyman William Oughtred (1574-1660), has a principal feature of a ‘double’ gnomon.
