North edge south in junior select matches

THE NORTH posted two victories over their south counterparts in the youth representative matches at An Aird, Fort William, on Sunday October 1.

The games were rescheduled from the previous weekend when wet weather left An Aird unplayable.

The under-14 Fraser MacPhee Memorial Cup was won 8-1 by the north – but the match was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests. Fort William’s Victor Smith got the north off to a great start with an early goal, and that was quickly followed by a well-taken goal from Skye’s Ross Gordon. The south responded with a neat strike from Inveraray’s Campbell Watt, but Victor Smith, against the run of play, restored the north’s twogoal advantage with another clinical strike from the edge of the box that gave Charlie Fergusson in the south goal no chance. The introduction of Glengarry’s Mungo Blakey gave the north another attacking dimension, and it was his determined run that led to Victor Smith claiming his hat-trick with a low grounder to bring the half-time score to 4-1 to the north.
