Action needed on affordable homes

‘Arran is a special place but it must be allowed to develop and grow’

Some 200 affordable homes are urgently needed to provide accommodation for the workforce required to grow Arran’s business sector.

While estimates suggest the Arran economy grew by as much as 10 per cent last year, the chronic lack of affordable housing is seriously impeding future growth.

Now Arran Development Trust is being set up, which it is hoped will act as a catalyst to bring the private and public sector together to get house building moving on the island.

A major study, commissioned last year, found the house price-to-earnings ratio on Arran is 8:2, with only London is higher at 10:4. Scotland as a whole is 3:2. This means that local wages do not allow local workers to purchase homes, and tourism and high prices attract high rents, again impacting on the potential workforce.
