The semi-finals and final of the AGA Thomson Cup were held in perfect conditions on Saturday June 11 at Machrie Bay, dry with a slight breeze.

The first semi saw Quintin Oliver take on former winner Donald Logan and eventually taking it 3 and 2. The second semi saw local man Phil Betley take on young Matthew Mac-Donald. This game went down the last all square with Phil winning 1up.

The final could not have been closer with the lead alternating every hole until Quintin went two up at the 12th. The first halved hole came at the 15th then Phil pulled it back to all square. Quintin then holed a superb long putt at the last to take the game to extra holes. Quintin then won at the first of these.

A superb game thoroughly enjoyed by the spectators. Thanks to Machrie Bay for hosting the competition and to David for the condition of the course. Hard luck Phil and well done Quintin – hope you made the 7.20pm.

This year’s Kelso Cup final was played at Corrie Golf Club on a beautiful summer’s evening although the dreaded Sannox midges were in attendance.
