CARDIFF HALF-MARATHON
SHADRACK KORIR and Viola Jepchumba completed a Kenyan double as they clocked record times in Britain’s third biggest race.
Korir led home a Kenyan one-two-three in 60:53 as he went nearly two minutes faster than his PB in his first race outside his home country.
The 20-year-old, who had run a best of 62:40 in Eldoret earlier this year, caused a shock as he beat Paris Marathon champion Cyprian Kotut.
Running on almost the same course on which Geoffrey Kamworor won the world half-marathon title in March in 59:10, he easily went under the previous best in the event of 61:51 by Loitarakwai Lengurisi in 2013.
The pair went through 5km in 14:29, 10km in 29:01, 15km in 43:47 and 20km in 57:58 before Korir broke clear on the same short incline near Roath Park Lake where Kamworor went away last spring.
He went away to finish 11 seconds clear in the city centre.
“I wanted to make sure there was a course record and we had a good group from the start,” said the winner. “Had we had pacemakers, then the time would have been much quicker because this is a very fast course.
