Jo Pavey: secured Olympic qualifying time as she placed fifth at the age of 42
JO PAVEY was unable to defend her European 10,000m title, but she put up a good fight in the championship’s first final as Kenyan-born teenager Yasemin Can, who acquired Turkish citizenship in May, won in a European under-23 record of 31:12.86.
After leading through the first two kilometres in 6:15.34, Can kicked in a 72.18 lap and she was more than 10 seconds clear at 4000m reached in 12:24.22 with Pavey second in 12:35.1.
Pavey was 11th at halfway in 15:45.1 as Can went further away in 15:30.03 with British champion Jess Andrews in medal contention in 15:43.6.
