JUNE 10
SUSSEX COUNTY SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS, Crawley CURRENT English Schools champions honed their preparation for this year’s event at Gateshead, many retaining their titles and setting PBs, Martin Duff reports.
Leading the way was 2015 200m junior girls’ champion, Amber Anning, who broke Carly Wenham’s 100m intermediate best with 12.12 and then
12.09, which revised her PB. Without the distraction of a disqualification of a rival, she might have been the first from her age group to duck under 12 seconds this year.
Another English Schools champion also found problems, but this time it was the distraction of exams that were the issue for Livvy Connor. She set a senior girls’ pole vault best of 3.50m, albeit some way down on her season’s best of 3.80m. “I’m in the middle of my exams and haven’t been training very much,” said the 18-year-old. “I also tried to change to a new pole.”
Chloe Billingham set a 3.50m PB in second, but both were outshone by intermediate girls’ winner and English Schools silver medallist Tash Purchas. The 15-year-old cleared 3.60m for a personal and championship best. She said: “I had a good warm-up today but could only do 3.42m last year.”
On the track, Max Fraser just missed a championship best in the junior boys’ 800m. After a 60-second opener he clocked 2:04.65 before collapsing to the track clutching his back. He said it hurt before the race and added: “I did it throwing the hammer on Wednesday.”
The 1500m saw big wins for senior boy Stephen Ferroni and intermediate girls Almi Nerurkar. Her time of 4:51.74 was nothing special, but her turn of speed at the bell destroyed the field.
In the junior girls’ 800m, Maia Hardman, the English under-15 indoor 800m silver medallist, was just outside her best with 2:18.41.
Rosie Forrester threw 46.52m in the intermediate hammer, while Ben Hawkins had a good throw of 57.10m to take the inter boys’ title, while in the javelin Eden Cole set a championship best of 59.22m.
Naomi Owolabi retained her title and beat her own junior girls’ shot championship best with 11.65m, while the jumps saw Lauren Lethbridge set a meeting record of 5.39m to win the arleton-Smithjunior girls’ long jump.
Following his sub-1:50 clocking over 800m in the BMC Grand Prix, Finley Bigg retained his senior boys’ 400m title with 49.43.
