CHAMPIONSHIP BEST?

DESPITE too many absentees, it was a good British Championships, I thought, and an encouraging number of Brits secured Olympic spots. However, while the standards were obviously well below those we will see at the US Championships, they also don’t compare well to France’s national championships last weekend and the throws standards were well below those at the Polish championships.

Anna MacFadyen of Scotland was the next British finisher, in seventh, in a race won by Czech athlete Barbora Havlickova.

Elliott Matier finished ninth in the under-18 race, which was dominated by a Turkish team who had six in the first seven.

England just lost out on bronze to Italy as Matier, who had only finished fifth in the England trial and was therefore in the B team, could not count.

French Championships, Angers, June 24/26

JIMMY VICAUT broke the 10-second barrier twice and approached the European record in the final.

He clocked 9.94 in the heat before improving to 9.88 in the final.

Christophe Lemaitre clocked 10.09 in his heat but pulled out of the final due to injury and didn’t contest the 200m, won by Vicaut in a more modest 20.62.

There was sad news for Teddy Tamgho, who won the triple jump with 17.15m ahead of Harold Correa (16.95m) but fractured his femur and was stretchered off the track and is out of the Olympics.

Renaud Lavillenie cleared a world-leading outdoor mark of 5.95m before attempting 6.01m.

Dimitri Bascou won the 110m hurdles in a just-over-the-limits (2.1m/ sec) 13.05 as Pascal Martinot-Lagarde failed to finish.

Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad won the steeplechase in 8:29.01 while 16-year-old Lisa Gunnarsson equalled her world youth record of 4.50m in the pole vault.
