As we now clearly know, there’s a lot more toLos Angeles than just being the home of the film industry, it’s also a colourful cultural destination. Beaches and bars, shopping and cars, yes – but how about art museums? Well, it’s got some of the world’s best, and it’s adding to the collection in style this month, with the opening of The Broad – a new contemporary art museum located on Grand Avenue, in downtown L.A.
The new museum was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro at a cost of $140 million, and covers 120,000 square feet with its innovative ‘veil and vault’ design concept. It was built by philanthropists and long-time art collectors Eli and Edythe Broad, and when it opens on 20th September, it will house more than 2,000 works of contemporary art. The best thing about it? Free admission means there’s no excuse not to pop along and take in some of the greatest 20th and 21st century artworks. Eli said, “It is our privilege to give this museum, the works in our art collections and a sizeable endowment and free admission as a gift to the people of Los Angeles.”
