Grew up in Indiana, an incredibly conservative state — even more so in the Eighties and Nineties when I was a kid. My family was always different because my parents are fairly liberal, and that sticks out in small traditionalist communities. Despite this, I wasn’t super-familiar with what ‘being gay’ was, because there were no examples of it around me.
