LEO IN LA LA LAND

Will asking for what you want cause a storm in a coffee cup, wonders LEO RICHARDSON

OPINION

YOU KNOW HOW we all make a joke of people who order really ridiculous coffee? Like a skinny, half-fat vanilla soy latte with extra foam? In LA you’ll hear someone say that every day and no one bats an eyelid because Americans aren’t afraid to ask for exactly what they want.

We Brits are the polar opposite; we’re embarrassed to be that direct. We don’t ask for the dressing on the side of our salad. We eat what we’re given, stay quiet and let the resentment build. We pay the bill and smile on our way out the door, and only when we’ve left do we let rip about how awful it was and how we’re never going there again. A friend might ask, “Well, why didn’t you say something?” but we usually reply along the lines of, “I didn’t want to make a fuss.”
