Sky’s the limit

Dominic Cooper tells us about returning to the set of Mamma Mia! with Meryl and Cher, reveals the reason Lily James called him a penis and why he hopes James Bond goes gay one day
Dominic wears leather jacket, top and leather trousers, all by Saint Laurent

Double bagging and Dominic Cooper are not words we expected to string together in the same sentence. Oh, get your mind out of the gutter. We’re talking about tea, specifically the terrible cuppa we served the British actor ahead of our exclusive interview. This pitiful offering was so weak and milky — honestly, it was only a dash — you could see your reflection in it. Cue the need for an extra teabag.

However, it didn’t pass muster with Dominic, who balked at the sight of the brew, but still politely knocked it back while warming up for our photoshoot, set in the grounds of a stunning home in North London. Polishing his finest blue-steel pose, the Hollywood heartthrob was at his brooding best. It’s hard to believe (said with a Jonathan van Ness hair swish) that he has just turned 40. Apparently, his beauty secret isn’t sheep-semen facials.

We did ask.

He’s no stranger to LGBT+ roles, having appeared in Angels in America, as part of 50 Years of the National Theatre, which he describes as a beautiful show. And in his youth, the first play he appeared in was Mark Ravenhill’s Mother Clap’s Molly House, an explicit production of a story about the haunts where gay men gathered in the 18th century.

A few days after the shoot, we’re back with Dominic to talk about the much-anticipated Mamma Mia! sequel. It’s been 10 years since the f-ABBA-ulous original [groan] and he couldn’t wait to return to the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi with cast mates Meryl Streep, Julie Walters and even ex-girlfriend Amanda Seyfried, which he assures us wasn’t awkward at all. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is also graced with the presence of a goddess who made us all believe in life after love: Cher. We predict the film will make a lot of Money, Money, Money [that’s quite enough now].
