→ After discovering a video recording linked to his sister’s disappearance in the woods 20 years earlier, James (McCune, who you might remember from appearances in Shameless and The Walking Dead) joins a group of college friends to venture out into the forest to find out what they can about the uncertain events of the past. As with the original Blair Witch Project, this uses a lot of trickery in its cinematic approaches: sharp camera work — using drones and hand-helds — and sudden, often trivial, loud noises. Is anything really happening? Despite director Adam Wingard’s somewhat predicable and overdone methods, Blair Witch still manages to be a tense and almost exhausting viewing experience which builds into what is one of the most genuinely terrifying finales in 21st-century horror cinema so far. 15 Sept
