Named after President Theodore Roosevelt, the landmark Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel opened on 15 May 1927. Since then it has welcomed generations of VIPs, from legends of Hollywood’s Golden Age to today’s hottest stars. It cost a massive $2.5 million to complete the 12-storey building, which holds 300 rooms and suites. The hotel is steeped in glamorous Hollywood history; it was here that the first ever Academy Awards were held, and Marilyn Monroe lived here while she was struggling to break into the industry. Gay British artist David Hockney added to the hotel’s iconography by painting the squiggle pattern mural on the bottom of the hotel pool in 1989.
