We’ve traversed Australia from coast to coast in search of some fabulous stories about rural and regional people and their lifestyles and businesses. We start with a handsome homestead in tranquil Toodyay in WA’s Avon Valley and end up on the other side of the country in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast hinterland where ceramicist Mel Lumb has a gorgeous home and studio. We head to the country music capital of Tamworth, NSW, where artist Carina Chambers celebrates a different dimension of country life with her works inspired by a childhood spent on a farm surrounded by a menagerie of animals. A bit further up the New England highway we visit Tina and Tom Skipper, custodians of land at Guyra that has belonged to their family since 1838. Then we track south to Tasmania’s Huon Valley, where The Australian/Vogel’s literary award-winning novelist K. M. (Kate) Kruimink lives with her family on a farm. If the past few months have taught us anything, it’s about the value of being more self-reliant, so our service feature looks to the garden and the many tools and services that are available to help us grow our own food and flowers.
