Australian Railway History  |  October 2017
October marks the Centenary of the opening of the standard gauge Trans-Australian Railways between Port Augusta and Kalgoorlie and a range of commemorative events will mark the occasion. John Beckhaus and Ross Willson describe the construction of the line, the locomotives and rolling stock procured for its operation and the train operations up to 1920.
Part 2 of David Matheson’s account of the evolution ‘From Steam to Diesel and Electric’ locomotives provides an in-depth account of the transformation that occurred on the Tasmanian, South Australian, Commonwealth and New South Wales Railways between 1955 and 1974. It is illustrated with photographs form the ARHSnsw Railway Resource Centre archives.
A short Explorer article on the NSW Government Railways Administrative Building at 509 Pitt Street and a review of the book Byways of Steam 31 conclude the issue.
