Q&A With Dr. Temple Grandin
This month, Dr. Temple Grandin answers parents’ questions about school issues, including bullying.
Q Meher of London, UK, states, “I realized my own autism after my son was assessed. I am a high-functioning autistic person who struggled with bullying during my high school days. I had no friends in high school and college. My son is five years old and verbal, but I’m afraid he’ll have similar experiences to mine. Any help and advice on how to be prepared for that?”
A I was bullied in high school, but I was not bullied in elementary or primary school. That’s because the teacher explained to the other students that I had a disability that was not physical, like a wheelchair or something like that. That’s called “peermediated intervention.”
