Bass Player UK  |  100 February 2014
Trees. Elephants. African grey parrots. Old ladies called Edith and Hilda. These are the things that traditionally live to be 100, not magazines, which is why we’re doubly – no, make that triply – delighted and chuffed to welcome you to Bass Guitar Magazine’s 100th issue, a mere 12 years after we started production in a disused nuclear bunker in the middle of a forest, using Sellotape and a biro to make our first issue. Who would have thought we’d make it this far, eh? Then again, if there’s one thing we’ve learned in our time (prepare for some pearls of wisdom here, reader) is that the world of the bass guitar is as healthy as it was back in 2002. Bass players need basses. Bass makers need bass players. Somewhere in the middle is where we fit in – and thanks to you, we’re still here, all these issues later.
What better way to headline our centennial issue than with the mighty Jack Bruce, one of the very few bassists who can claim to have kicked off this whole new-fangled electric bass thing, 50 years ago and counting.
Jack’s history is a bit more prestigious than ours – after all, he’s been a bona fide legend since the Cream days back in the late 60s – but we’re doing our best to compete, as you’ll see from our covers gallery. All 100 of them are there for your amusement, from our early covers made of cardboard and Tippex to the current miracle of digital design that you see before you. Add the combined reminiscences of our five-man editor team to date and we think we’re rounding off 100 issues in business rather nicely.
But we’re not looking back: we’re looking forward – specifically to providing you with the best magazine we can, now just as we did in 02. With the most user-friendly tuition and review sections on the market, this issue is the usual one-stop shop for bass gear.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support so far, and as long as you need us, we’ll be here. See you at the LBGS at Olympia on 1 and 2 March...
