North Darfur is one of the driest areas in Sudan. Climate change has worsened the cycle of prolonged droughts and flash flooding. Growing crops and raising animals is incredibly tough. An influx of people once displaced by conflict, now moving back to villages has meant more trees are lost for firewood and more land turned to desert.
Following civil war, communities are entering yet another disaster, tearing families apart. Or at least that was the case until development group, Practical Action, worked with community members to develop an ingenious solution.
