From thrifty stews rustled up from so little, to using every part of the veg from top to toe, being sparing and conscientious about food was something generations before us took immense pride in. With the value of food high, many of us grew up being told to ‘clean our plates’, never letting anything edible go to waste. But a shift has taken place – food isn’t the precious resource it once was, and we now have a ‘throw-it-in-the-bin’ mindset instead. Over-consumption and over-buying has led us here, and it’s time to bring back a more mindful approach to what we buy, consume and discard. Our plates should be clean because we’ve made ourselves the right amount to eat and are satisfied – not because we’ve emptied it into the trash.
