The Magic of Growing Your Own
One of the most effective ways to cut your food footprint is to get outside and cultivate your own – garden designer Eliza Nicholas shows us how
Growing your own food is satisfying and has delicious, nutrient-packed results – but the benefits don’t end there. With lots of the food we buy travelling many miles to get to our plates, often packaged in single-use plastic, growing edibles is a really environmentally-friendly option. Using whatever space you have to grow fruit, veggies and herbs, you can eat seasonally and have a better understanding of what you’re consuming, and you can even grow organically if you choose to.
Assess your space
Home-grown produce has unbeatable flavour, and the wide choice of varieties available to grow from seed means there’s hundreds of options to try. The magical process of raising plants from seed to harvest means that we become more mindful growers and eaters. Food waste is often significantly reduced, as we tend to only pick or dig up what we need for each meal. Food growers are more likely to maximise every edible part of the plant when we know the effort that has gone in to creating it.
