This 1925 Exhibit card of Lou Gehrig – released during the Hall of Famer’s first full season in the majors and graded – was sold for $801,960 with buyer’s premium in Goldin Auctions’ 2021 Goldin Elite Auction that closed January 31.
The postcard-sized Exhibit earned a PSA 6 EX-MT with a notation of a mark on the card. That was a handwritten notation (“Lou Gehrig”) on the card’s unprinted reverse side that had been largely erased and is barely visible.
Some collectors, as well as Goldin Auctions, consider this to be Gehrig’s Rookie Card. It is an early-period release for the then 22-year-old New York native. Gehrig’s debut with the Yankees came in 1923 when he was 20 years old, but he only logged 23 games and 38 at-bats combined over those two seasons. He broke out in 1925, hitting .295 with 20 HR and 10 triples.
Bidding opened at $25,000, and attracted 36 bids.
