LOOKING FOR THE HOBBY’S NEXT BIG THING? THAT PLAYER MIGHT ALREADY BE HIDING IN YOUR COLLECTION

COULD HOBBY HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF?

Remember, it was just about this time last year that collectors began scrambling through their commons boxes hoping to find a long forgotten RC. The object of everyone’s search was Jordan Binnington, the goaltender who finally got his shot with the St. Louis Blues four years after his first cards hit the market. Not only was it a great sports story, but it was a lesson in perseverance…as well as patience.

That same patience could again pay off for collectors holding on to the cards of a freshman who, for one reason or another, has slipped below the radar. Who might emerge from the darkness as the next Binnington? Here are a few likely candidates.

ALEX FORMENTON, LW, OTTAWA (BELLEVILLE, AHL)

If there’s one thing you need to know about top Ottawa Senators prospect Alex Formenton, it’s this: He’s fast. Seriously. Like Mathew Barzal at the NHL All-Star Game fast.

“Speed. Everybody will talk about his speed,” former Sens coach Guy Boucher said. “He has McDavid-type of speed in terms of what he looks like and how light he looks on his feet. His glide is unbelievable.”

The 20-year-old winger has routinely made minor league defensemen appear sluggish this season, using his breathtaking speed to roar down the wall before cutting inside to create a premium scoring chance.

“I feel like they could just keep this tweet on repeat,” Ottawa beat writer Chris Stevenson offered in response to a post from the AHL’s Belleville Senators. “‘Formenton blows by (fill in the blank) …’”
