Kalle Sauerland tells Matt Christie why George Groves, David Price and Dereck Chisora can still rule the world
PROUD LEADER: Sauerland regards many of the fighters he promotes as friends

WHEN you talk to promoters you don’t always get honest answers. Understandable agendas blur the lines between fact and fiction. We’re only told what they want us to hear. But with Kalle Sauerland, the German- based promoter who grew up in London, one detects plenty of truthfulness. Perhaps that’s why several high-profile British fighters, like George Groves, Dereck Chisora and David Price, have joined up with Team Sauerland in recent years. In London, shortly before Christmas, Boxing News caught up with Kalle at the press conference to promote Groves’ January 30 scrap with Andrea Di Luisa, to get the inside track on the developments of those faltering Brits, and the secrets behind the success of one of Sauerland’s leading lights – and recent bogeyman to Paul Smith and Martin Murray – WBO super-middleweight boss, Arthur Abraham.

Although the fight was rubbish, we must look at the build-up around the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight. Although we all love it, the people involved love it, boxing is a fringe sport. It will always be second to football, which is fair enough. But for that week we were kings of the world, that week was boxing’s week. Unfortunately it ended when the fight started. It wasn’t the fight that was the highlight, it was the event. It might have been a s*** fight, but it was very important for boxing. The second one was Tyson Fury beating Wladimir Klitschko.
