In addition to providing regular feed, you can supplement your hens’ diet with free-ranging time or by tossing edible plants into the run.

To have layer chickens is to confront lots of choices. With chicken feed, the choices can break down to cracked grains vs. pellets, organic vs. nonorganic and local vs. national.

Cracked & Crumbled vs. Pellets

My wife and I started six years ago giving our hens locally produced cracked grains (not scratch) because it seemed more natural than anonymous looking pellets. And it does look more natural and appealing to our eyes. But for the chickens, all they saw was the cracked corn and a few other larger grains. About a third of what came in each bag went uneaten because it was so much dust, really.
