THE TIME
THE TIME
RHINO
★★★★
The Time’s debut album credits the band – featuring future superstar producers Jam & Lewis – as its creators. In reality, The Time is a Prince album in all but name. The Time singer Morris Day replaces Prince’s guide vocals, but the rest of the album is entirely played and (under his Jamie Starr alias) produced by Prince. OK, the rumbling synth stabs in the hyperactive chant Cool are from Prince’s keyboardist Dr Fink, but he’s not in The Time either. In short, The Time is one of the best albums not to feature the band credited with making it. Which, when you’ve got Jimmy Jam on keyboards and Terry Lewis on bass at your disposal, is a pretty ballsy move even by Prince’s standards.
