Despite its long, narrow dimensions being ill-suited to busy outdoor concerts, British Summer Time never fails to draw in big audiences and even bigger names. Sandwiched between spectacular shows from Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand, a Saturday night in the company of Stevie Wonder should be an imperious occasion despite a smattering of rain. It’s certainly helped by a stellar line-up throughout the day, not least with Lionel Richie delivering a flawless cavalcade of hits, leaving the crowd to do half the singing as he sits back and takes in the view.
While owning crowds of this size is now second nature to the former Commodore, there’s nothing disingenuous about his appreciation for the reaction to Three Times A Lady, Say You, Say Me, and a particularly poignant We Are The World.
