TECHNOLOGY is like electricity – it
makes a wonderful servant, but a lousy
enemy. Or to put it another way, when
it’s working, it is marvellous, when it is not,
you can be in a bit of a fix.
Although I am something of a dinosaur (in terms
of looks and approach to life), I rely on technology
a great deal, partly from choice and partly from
convenience. That technology, of course, embraces
computers and all that goes with them. Digital
photos and documents are an absolute boon to
me, because they mean I can send or receive a
feature any time of the day to or from any part of
the world. A decade or so ago, that would have
involved getting pictures printed and then posting
them. So now, for example, I could get stuff from
Australia within a few minutes of it being sent. The
computer also allows me to research subjects on
the internet and that is incredibly handy.
However, like everything else in life, computers
don’t last forever and my trusty PC decided to play
up big time. I’ve got a spare, but it’s very much
outdated and allowed me only the basic minimum
of functions.
Not to be
defeated, I
fiddled with
my everyday
machine,
plugged it in and then BANG! Yes, literally. The
loud noise was followed by a cloud of smoke that
filled the loft. It was actually quite amusing and at
least meant that I need no longer bother trying to
effect a repair.
Anyhow, the top and bottom of all this is that
I lost a fair bit of information – despite my best
efforts in backing it up – so if you think I should
have got back to you for something or the other
and it appears that I’ve either forgotten or are
ignoring you, that is not the case. It is the fault of
technology and its failure to continue working for a
while.
Still, all is OK, now, and my computer is
functioning beautifully. Until the next time, chinchin,
