ANOTHER DAY AT THE OFFICE

AMID INCREASING THREATS OF WORKPLACE VIOLENCE, YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO STAY SAFE ON THE JOB
Remington’s RM380 is one of a growing number of pocket-sized .380 semi-autos. Are they ideal for every defensive situation? No, but they’re easy to conceal and accurate enough for close-range shots.

Most of us feel safe at work, but are we? According to a report published by the National Safety Council, violence is the fourth leading cause of deaths in the workplace; in 2017 there were over 18,000 workplace assaults and 452 workplace deaths that were the direct result of on-the-job attacks..

That same report indicated, as you might expect, that certain jobs ran a higher risk of workplace violence. Health care workers and those in the education field were at particular risk of being attacked while on the job. Taxi drivers are, on average, 20 times more likely to be assaulted at work than were other employees. Regardless of your position or place of work, though, you need to have an action plan to deal with an attack.

That same report also maintains that evacuation is the best defense against an attack, but what if you can’t run? What if you try to hide but you are found? In those circumstances the outlook can be very grim.

More and more Americans are exercising their Second Amendment right to carry a firearm. Evacuation and de-escalation are still the best options, but when violence finds you and help isn’t at hand you are responsible for your own survival. And, where allowed, defensive firearms are an effective method of personal protection. But staying safe in the workplace is about more than simply having a gun close at hand. You need to develop a comprehensive plan to protect yourself and that requires a multi-pronged approach to defense. If you’re going to carry on the job here are some things you need to consider.
