Lichen lies, hat stuff & wind wipe

And you thought the Brangelina breakup was shocking. It turns out that we’ve also been wrong about fungi-algae relationships— at least the ones that form lichens. Thanks to a recent study in the journal Science, we now know that a lichen, long thought to be a combination of only two symbiotic partners (a fungus and an alga), also includes a yeast. The yeast may produce chemicals that allow lichens to defend against microbes. It was Swiss botanist Simon Schwendener who first proposed the “dual theory” of lichens in 1867. He probably also predicted that Brad would stay with Jen.
