BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL

With her new album, Mary Lambert stands on her own terms.
SHERVIN LAINEZ

THE L-LIST

If you had to sum up Mary Lambert in one word, it might well be “authentic”— not a word that often springs to mind when you’re describing a pop star! But then, Lambert is by no means a typical pop star.

As you probably know, unless you’ve been living under a rock, Mary Lambert is a musician from Washington state who got her big break when she sang the hook of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s 2014 smash, “Same Love,” a hip-hop song in support of marriage equality. But Lambert herself is not a hip-hop artist. Her music falls more in the singer-songwriter genre—but her songs are written on the piano rather than the guitar, and her repertoire is as likely to include intense spoken-word pieces as it is feel-good pop tunes. The song that made her a star is “She Keeps Me Warm,” a deceptively simple ballad that includes the hook from “Same Love” (“I can’t change, even if I tried”), which this straight, male writer admits he still can’t listen to (or watch) without getting misty-eyed.
