WHAT TO DRINK Red wine and port are great, but there are other options. Blue cheese goes well with a sweet white wine such as a monbazillac, and a white burgundy suits many cheeses, as it has flavour and body yet doesn’t dominate the palate.

1 Choosing Aim for a variety of milk types, styles and origins – but give a nod to the time of year. All the cheeses in this selection taste great in mid-winter.
