I grew up in Samoa with my aunties until I was eight, before I moved to New Zealand to live with my parents. I ran barefoot in the plantations and was a tomboy. We’d get papaya off the trees or cocoa fruit to make our own hot chocolate. There were always chickens and livestock around. Nothing came in a packet; we grew or killed it.
