This month chefs all over the British Isles are sweating over more than their onions. This is the time of year when the Michelin Guide announces which restaurants in the UK and Ireland have gained, retained or lost their coveted stars. For many, this is a very big deal.
Losing both stars from his New York restaurant in 2013 made the famously macho Gordon Ramsay cry. “If I lose a star, I’ll kill myself,” French chef Bernard Loiseau confided to a friend shortly before he did indeed commit suicide amid speculation that his restaurant La Côte d’Or in Burgundy was about to lose its third Michelin star.
