For any tow vehicle, arguably no other gauge is as critical as a pyrometer. Knowing your exhaust gas temperatures can mean the difference between an engine with a melted piston or one that lasts hundreds of thousands of miles. When our Ultra-Lite AutoMeter pyrometer quit working after 10 years of loyal service, we decided to try out a new look in the form of the company’s Phantom line. Sourced through Summit Racing, the 0-2,000-degree F pyrometer (PN 5745) features a digital stepper motor that self-calibrates during power-up and comes with an ultra-accurate Type-K thermocouple.

Over the past five months, we’ve been prepping a ’97 F-350 for heavy hauling with the hope that the finished product could tow as well as newer trucks do—for a fraction of the cost. Along the way, we added new leaf springs (Part 1), air helper springs (Part 2), a heavy duty Class V hitch and a modern trailer brake controller (Part 3). For added performance and reliability we also installed a 5-inch exhaust system (Part 3), a 6.0L-intended transmission cooler (Part 4), and an electric fuel system (Part 5). Now it’s time to keep tabs on the engine and transmission, along with ensuring the rear axle is prepared to handle the added stress of towing 10,000-12,000 pounds.
