THE BOOTLEGGER

A RESTO-MOD ‘39 FORD PACKING A BILLET-BLOCK CUMMINS AND 1,420 LB-FT

In the year 2019, it’s not exactly easy to build something that stands out in the street rod scene anymore. Homegrown and professionally built pre-’49 cars have saturated this particular niche for decades.

After getting his hands on a well-preserved ’39 Ford, Todd Cox decided to take a different approach.

“We wanted to build a unique street cruiser that turned heads yet got decent mileage,” he told us.

After partnering with Dan Scheid (yeah, that Dan Scheid), Todd was able to execute this very plan to perfection at his shop, Todd’s Hot Rods, in Oakwood, Illinois. With more than 70 years of combined auto body and diesel engine knowledge, the two masters of their respective crafts ended up with the flawless sedan you see here.

Wearing Standox base and clear coat, the classic Ford conceals a 720 hp Cummins under the hood, a built 47RH transmission underneath and a complete rear end from a Nissan Skyline out back.

Already having seen immense success in truck-pulling with his billet-aluminum-blocked Cummins mills, Dan Scheid was eager to use the ’39 project as a way to showcase his battle-tested crankcase in a different light—in water-cooled form and with a production oil pump onboard. From 500 to 3,000-plus hp, Scheid’s billet-block engine program is highly versatile, and the possibilities in street applications are virtually endless. To make room for the lengthy Cummins, the firewall was set back 12 inches by the folks at Todd’s Hot Rods.
