DOLORES

Directed by Peter Bratt

The suppression of female stories in history is rampant – often to the detriment of the greater society – but more importantly to the people who need heroines that reflect who they are, as shown recently by the Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures. Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America, has been virtually erased from the history books, unlike well-known Cesar Chavez, the frontman of the migrant workers’ movement. In Peter Bratt’s documentary Dolores, Huerta finally gets her heroic narrative on the big screen. It’s a mix of historical footage and interviews with family and other activists of the day, and is an honest portrayal of the life and political passion of a long-forgotten woman. She is one of the reasons I still don’t buy seedless grapes! Her story adds another notch to the reflection that we all need: a female campaigner stepping above the parapet for individual rights, for all our rights.
