SARAH WATERS TALKS TO SOPHIE WARD ABOUT A NEW FILM ADAPTATION OF HER NOVEL, FINGERSMITH

SARAH WATERS

“But, here was a curious thing. The more I tried to give up thinking of her, the more I said to myself, ‘She’s nothing to you’, the harder I tried to pluck the idea of her out of my heart, the more she stayed there.”

Sarah Waters, Fingersmith

From the streets of Victorian London to the great estate of Briar, the first part of Sarah Waters’ novel Fingersmith follows the unreliable heart of lady’s maid Sue Trinder as she attempts to lure her mistress into a sham marriage. In the second part of the book, we are privy to Maud Lilly’s side of the story and her own machinations and deprivations. Threaded through the plot twists and reversals of fortune, are the cords that bind these two women together as they fall in love and attempt to outwit their captors.
