BUILDING A SAFE SPACE FOR LATINX PEOPLE FLEEING GENDERBASED VIOLENCE

LAWA

WORDS DANIELLE MUSTARDE, PHOTOS LAWA

Shorthand for Latin American Women’s Aid (lawadv.org.uk), LAWA is the charitable organisation behind the only two refuges for, and by, Latin American women in Europe.

“Our refuges are a place for women and their children fleeing gender-based violence to be safe”, explains Yara Rodrigues Fowler, a trustee at LAWA.

“The services we offer go beyond the refuge itself – we run English classes, our ‘change-maker’ empowerment programme, an advice centre, crèche and counselling in English, Spanish and Portuguese, as well as a housing project and children and young people’s services. With LAWA, our aim is to help survivors to empower themselves and go on to rebuild their lives.”
