Cycling the Danube

CINDY SMITH is a Genevabased writer intrigued by the nuance of life.

The city of Passau, with its beautiful baroque architecture and ambient cafe scenes, is the natural ménage à trois between the rivers Inn from the south, Ilz from the north, and the western Danube. Originating in the Swabian Alps, the Danube flows through 10 countries and millennia of human history, before meeting her delta in the Black Sea.

I’m in Passau to cycle the Danube with Laura – good friend and novice bike tourer – who I’ve lured along with the ultimate reassurance: “If it gets too much you can always hop on a train or ferry.” And so, armed with a copious supply of anti-chafing cream, Laura and I are on Luitpold Bridge one warm July morning, handlebars bearing east to Vienna, our destination 205 miles downstream.
