DNA: Being trans and of colour was an obstacle at the start of your modelling career, has that changed with your success and growing community awareness of trans people?
Laith Ashley: I actually don’t think it was too much of an issue for me at first. It allowed me to stand out initially. However, once the fascination and intrigue with my story faded it became more challenging. I just keep a positive outlook on everything I experience. I allow myself to feel disappointment, but I tell myself I have to keep moving forward. As far as bringing awareness to the community, I think it’s a community effort. The obstacles exist, but I hope the weight gets lighter as time goes on.
