“It was the only one of my covers to cause any controversy,” he reveals. “From what I remember, the buyers at WH Smith contacted us to express concern that the cover was inappropriately adult in content. We didn’t really understand what they were talking about – the Vervoids hardly topped the list of most terrifying Doctor Who monsters – until a representative explained that someone at Smiths had thought the image was of…” Clay suppresses a laugh, “a lady’s, er, private areas!”
