Time for Tea

In 1976 Tom Baker was one of television’s biggest stars. So it’s perhaps unsurprising that Doctor Who was chosen to lead a pioneering marketing campaign for a well-known brand of tea bags…
A 1976 box of Ty-Phoo tea bags featuring the Doctor Who promotion.
Twelve different cards were available to collect, including Davros from Genesis of the Daleks (1975) and a Krynoid from The Seeds of Doom (1976).
A wallchart featured spaces for each card. The illustration was provided Target Books artist Chris Achilleos.
The reverse of each card explained how to obtain the wallchart and the associated book, The Amazing World of Doctor Who.

With Britain in the grip of a heatwave and eventually a severe drought, the summer of 1976 was a thirsty one. The nation was gasping for a nice cup of tea and – water shortages permitting – from July to September Doctor Who fans had an extra incentive to put the kettle on.
