Pirate Treasure

Douglas Adams left behind boxes of notebooks and other paperwork that offer tantalising clues about his mercurial creative process.
Douglas Adams was a student at St John’s from 1971 to 1974. The Cambridge college now holds his archive.

Amidst the Jacobean Gothic splendour of the Old Library at St John’s College, Cambridge, a treasure trove of priceless historical papers and artefacts are carefully preserved for future generations.

Housing everything from precious medieval manuscripts and fragments of Greek papyri to Wordsworth’s breakfast cup and saucer, the college’s Special Collections archive also includes the personal and family papers of such eminent Johnians as the portrait photographer Sir Cecil Beaton, the astronomer Sir William Herschel and the slavery abolitionist William Wilberforce. And, since 2012, it has been home to 67 boxes of notebooks, manuscripts, photographs, sound recordings and other personal effects belonging to the late Douglas Adams.
