In 2014, Jacob Dudman made a video recreating Matt Smith’s final speech as the Eleventh Doctor and uploaded it to YouTube. Now, he’s voicing the character in brand-new adventures as narrator of The Eleventh Doctor Chronicles.

“I was listening to a little of snippet of the early edits, comparing it to the video that I did years ago, and it’s come on leaps and bounds,” he says. “At the beginning, I could do the soft tone of Matt’s final speech – that’s being able to do one dimension of the character. But being able to do when they’re shouty, when they’re quiet, when they’re worried – being able to do all the different aspects of the character… I think that’s hopefully developed.”

Jake also notices a difference between his latest performances and April’s The Tenth Doctor Chronicles. “If I’m totally honest – and hopefully I’m the only person who even recognises this! – I think that they’ve improved massively,” he says. “I think a lot of that is to do with confidence and experience – settling into ‘This is what I do as a job’. It was so daunting to be stepping into the shoes of my childhood heroes.”

The four new stories are set throughout the Eleventh Doctor’s life, each featuring a different one of his friends. The first – AK Benedict’s The Calendar Man – features Amy Pond and introduces an unusual new baddie. “The Calendar Man is a villain who I really, really hope returns to Big Finish,” says Jake. “It’s such an inventive idea, and truly creepy.”
