100 YEARS OF JON

GREG DUNN ESTONIA Jon Pertwee was my first Doctor. I distinctly recall an episode of The Mutants [1972] being my introduction to the series, as one of an endless loop of repeats on ABC TV in Australia in the early 80s. I was hooked immediately.

I never got the chance to meet Jon Pertwee, but as a member of the organising committee of two Australian conventions in the mid-90s I was lucky enough to spend time with Katy Manning and John Levene, and their admiration for Jon shone through. They were as warm as their recollections, and I was grateful to feel, through them, just that little bit closer to the man responsible for my lifelong love.

RICHARD CHALK EMAIL I met Jon at a convention in 1993 and showed him the original of my artwork tribute to Frontier in Space and a pen-and-ink of the 1970s Doctors. This was artwork I had produced for the event programme. Jon was as gracious, elegant and entertaining as you’d expect. I smoked back then, and he sneaked a draw on my cigarette (“Don’t tell the wife!”) and waxed lyrical about how proud he was of his son’s growing acting achievements and abilities at that time. As for my painting, he smiled, winked and simply said, “Hmm. Looks like I’ve just broken wind…”
