One of Doctor Who’s most progressive script editors, Christopher H Bidmead weaved some challenging scientific principles into the series’ narratives…
Adrienne Corri, who played Mena in The Leisure Hive, was impressed by the story’s scientific aspects.

Nobody took Doctor Who into the future like Christopher H Bidmead, the script editor of the 1980-81 series. At his job interview, he remembers saying, “Look, I like the idea of this, but I’ve been watching some Doctor Whos since you invited me in and, frankly, I think they’re silly.”

At this point, it seems executive producer Barry Letts knew he’d found the man for the job. “I didn’t know who Barry was,” says Chris. “He’d been sitting very quietly beside [incoming producer] John Nathan-Turner, who was doing all the talking. If you ever find yourself in an interview where there’s a quiet man who’s not saying anything, he’s the guy in charge. Barry leapt in and said, ‘That’s exactly what we want. We want the silliness gone and the science brought back in.’”
