Stephen Gallagher, writer of Warriors’ Gate and Terminus, describes the challenges he faced in realising his ambitious visions of the future.
“I was out to have fun,” says Stephen Gallagher.

On 16 November 1979, BBC Radio 4 broadcast An Alternative to Suicide, a science-fiction play by 25-year-old Stephen Gallagher. The story told of interstellar flights in the 22nd century, with human crews engineered to the peak of efficiency, almost like robots. Then Maverick Lesterman (Michael Jayston) begins to break through his conditioning…

Producer Martin Jenkins thought the play – and Gallagher – might be of interest to the Doctor Who production team, so sent a copy of the script through the BBC’s internal mail. “I’m forever in his debt,” says Stephen, who a few weeks after that radio broadcast met with Doctor Who’s new script editor, Christopher H Bidmead, at his office in Threshold House.

Christopher H Bidmead was script editor of the 1980-81 series.
