When it doesn’t go to plan

As family history enthusiasts we love to share our knowledge. Here Diane Lindsay gives a sneak peek at her solutions to surviving the perils of addressing an audience – for those times when things go a little awry

Unaccustomed (as I am not) to public speaking, I’ve been doing quite a bit lately and have some tips for anyone daring to dip a toe into the sometimes tepid waters of addressing an audience.

Perhaps the most pertinent is ‘Don’t spill orange juice on your notes just before you step up to the lectern’. Especially whilst experiencing a recurrence of uveitis, (wobbly iris to the uninitiated). With April’s wonderful Family Tree Live still fresh in my mind and the slightly horrid memory of marrying Crimean William to the wrong wife through a distinctly damp set of blurry bullet points, here’s my not entirely serious advice on averting total public disgrace without breaking into bitter sobs because you spent 1,000 hours rehearsing this, or running like lightning out of the big doors at the end of the venue. (Not good form.) In a like situation, (and I’ve had a few, who hasn’t?) you have three choices.
